Guided Reading

Training

A Reading Strategy Chart

The participation in our Guided Reading Training on Saturdays has been very satisfying to see.  We have heard much positive feedback about the ideas, methodology, etc.  With all Liberty teachers "on the same page" as far as the Guided Reading philosophy goes, and with continued implementation and refinement of skills, our reading instruction will be much for focused.

Our last session, on Saturday, April 6, will focus on the Literacy Block: comprehension lessons, what other students should be doing while Guided Reading is happening in small groups, and more.  We are eager to hear more from each of you about how it is going.  It is, after all, a learning and growing process!

Steps

1. Start by choosing an interesting short story to read to the students.

2. Decide on a few general reading processes or strategies that you want to focus on modeling as you do your Think Aloud.  Research shows that good readers use the strategies illustrated in the following cartoon every time that they read (Wilhelm, 2001).
